Sketch #17: An old wise man in the forest
A sketch for "The House Beautiful" - The New Amsterdam Theater
From this week, I attempted a reinterpretation of a bannister I saw at The New Amsterdam Theater. I used some new Faber-Castell grey pens for outlines and love having a controlled palette narrowed to my favorite colors blue and green. I was inspired by the detail of the theater. Having been in most Broadway theaters now, the New Amsterdam blows all of them out of the water in terms of artistic detail and scale. You certainly feel the ghosts of Zeigfeld Follies when you are inside. It is a miracle (and with the help of millions of dollars) that Disney saved the theater from almost complete ruin. It was empty for almost five decades following the Great Depression.
